Something Old is New Again: Vintage Weddings

The summer has come and gone and the fall wedding season is quickly approaching, which means the art of trying something new is in the air…or in the case of the vintage wedding trend, the art of reinventing something old is in the air!

Whenever I work on a vintage inspired wedding, I can’t help but feel that I am telling a unique story to the world; every piece that the bride and groom selects is a reflection of them as a couple and brings their personal story of love and commitment to life in an exciting way. These weddings are not about how big the wedding can be or how much money they can spend on it, they are about creating a warm and inviting environment to bring together friends and family to celebrate. After working on my fair share of vintage inspired weddings, I have compiled a list of my favorite flowers and hard goods that I have found to be the best components when putting together the ultimate vintage wedding.

For today’s post, we will cover the fresh side of things!

  • Gypsophila AKA Baby’s Breath: I really like to use large, over-sized groupings of gypsophila for these events; they are quick and easy to design and they fill in a large space at a fraction of the cost. I know that a large composite of gypsophila is not a new trend in weddings, but when you pair them with mercury glass and tall pilsner vases, they make a powerful statement. I usually like my gypsophila with a big head (examples include Overtime, Excellence, or Magnet) but for this trend I prefer to use Million Star since its smaller head size and fuller appearance fills in so much nicer.

  • Roses: I love to use a blown open antique colored rose; they play up the vintage theme and bring a softer more muted sophistication to the wedding. My favorites are Mother of Pearl, Hermosa, Vendela, Earl Grey, Sahara, and Quicksand just to name a few. These roses posses a more vintage color pallet that enhances the surrounding décor. I love to cluster 3 or so of these beautiful blooms in small votives around the table, even better is if you can find different styled small vases to mix up and scatter around the table with a cluster of these roses inside each.

  • Hydrangea: A large hydrangea bloom can go a long way, which is one of the reasons why hydrangea is one of the top selling wedding flowers. With a vintage wedding I love to mound up hydrangeas in an urn and use them as an altar piece, they are simple by design but still large enough to command attention in a large space. Hydrangeas are also wonderful because of their colors; antique, blue, white, pink, purple, and green are the basic colors but these vivacious beauties also handle being tinted with paint very well.

  • Lisianthus: I absolutely love lisianthus for a vintage wedding! From their soft delicate petals to their pointy little buds, lisianthus really lightens the feel of a heavy arrangement composed of hydrangea and roses. Their whimsical charisma elevates a design and provides it with a feeling of sophisticated rhythm. I always recommend using Dutch lisianthus when the option is available; though it is more expensive, it’s well worth the added cost because Dutch bunches are fuller and the blooms are more plentiful. These lovely blooms are definitely worth the splurge.

  • Local Product: Once upon a time, local blooms were your only option, there was no South American or Dutch market so everything you used was grown locally. The idea of a vintage wedding is to step back in time and what better way to carry that theme than to use locally sourced blooms. Sunflowers, celosia, millet, and gomphrenia are just a few of the product lines available during the summer months and into the fall wedding season. Mixing different types of local blooms is one thing you really can’t go wrong with using in this wedding trend!
