It has been 15+ years in the making, but the wait has been well worth it!  World-renown event designer, David Beahm, has fulfilled his life-long dream (as many do in our industry) to have a flower variety carry his namesake. The initial concept started to formalize when David was visiting the tulip fields in Holland with other industry friends on one of his many “tulip tours.”

The process of bringing a new tulip to market is a daunting task that requires a lot of his time and attention – and patience – which makes the honor of having a tulip named even sweeter. Sometimes taking up to 25 years to bring a tulip to market, breeders and growers must invest tremendous sums of money to duplicate them over the years to assure that quality and consistency and longevity of the breed can be achieved before releasing their babies into the world.

With strong support from The Netherlands flower cheerleader, Piet van Kampen @gfreshpiet, along with tulip specialist, breeder and educator Frank Timmerman @franktimmerman8, and tulip grower J. Schouten Tulips in Andjik, Netherlands the new tulip became a reality. They kindly offered to name the tulip after David.

Fast forward to today, J. Schouten Tulips is now producing “Tulipa D. Beahm,” a name that was officially gifted by the tulip growers in the Netherlands as a way of thanking David for his support of the flower industry and famous “tulip tours.” It is unofficially named “The David Beahm” The color starts as a vermilion, a red orange that was originally derived from the powdered mineral cinnabar. It does have the larger head size and also a long vase life that mellows in color as it ages.

Production is currently limited to around 20,000 on the Aalsmeer Flower Auction, but that number will grow exponentially over the next few years. DVFlora customers can request a special order by contacting their sales associate.

David is currently considering a “Tulip Tour” to visit the tulip fields and glass houses of Holland in 2025.  Stay tuned for more information!
